I downloaded the Microsoft Security Essentials Ongoing Beta from Microsoft Connect this evening, and as before it installed normally. However, when I tried to update it to the latest version (the setup file on Connect is very out-of-date) the definitions came in fine but the core product refused to upgrade and only provided the error code 0×80070050.
Event viewer wasn’t helpful, a reboot didn’t fix it, and neither did uninstalling/reinstalling. On a whim, though, I decided to try to the upgrade through Windows Update (after enabling Microsoft Update) and what do you know, it worked!
TL;DR Version: If you get the 0×80070050 error code while trying to upgrade MSE through the MSE program itself, enable Microsoft Update via the Windows Update Control Panel and do the upgrade from there.

THANKS !, exactly my problem and exactly the solution
PD
thanks for sharing this valuable information but there are many other ways available to update Microsoft security essentials error, I was getting the same error and reached to your blog and tried this way but was not able to make it because of some other unidentified errors and then I found under given solution so I thought I must share it with other users. You can manually update MSE. Please let me share it with the users: check the link given under given:

i don.t know where to start this fix
@g davidson:
In my case, I just opened Windows Update and let it do it’s thing (Start Menu -> All Programs). It listed an update for MSE, and I just made sure it was selected.
Some people haven’t had any luck that way, either, so the other thing to try is to just remove MSE from your computer, reboot, and then reinstall the newest copy directly from Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/security_essentials/default.aspx)
No work either way, None of suggestion above works. Pls help
Did you check under the Optional Updates area, as there have been a few product updates over the last month or so?
