When it comes to naming conventions, everyone will give you a different answer. Some people will say the names should be based on location, like “LIVINGROOM”, “BEDROOM”, “SHOWER”, etc…. Others will say they should be named based on what they do, as in “WEBSERV1″, “PRINTSERV3″, “PRONSTOR99″, etc…. A lot of people tend to name their machines after asset tags, or the people who use them.
Myself? I like to name machines after comic book characters. My current lineup is: “CALVIN”, “HOBBES”, “SATCHEL”, “BUCKY”, “OPUS”, “BILL-THE-CAT”, and this server, “STEVE-DALLAS”.
What can I say?

That’s awesome! My bet is that Bucky is machine that is a pain in the ass.
Kate and I right now have the machines named after Mario villains: King Boo, Thwomp, Boo, Shy Guy, Dry Bones and Bullet Bill. The network used to be the Jay and Silent Bob reference “BooBooKittyFuck” but now it’s “HAL”.

In past work I have seen machines and servers named after rivers (in alberta)… location in the world (vernon sgs) and at home I name them after who is using them mainly, but the fileserv is just called fileserv. Lol. Comic book naming is a cool idea. Never heard of that one before.

Bucky is actually a dis-used Debian VM. Calvin is my little laptop, Hobbes is my gaming rig, with Satchel, Opus, and Bill-the-Cat as mobile devices.
